Anthropic’s Claude Code is the hottest developer tool on the planet. It can write entire features, debug production issues, and ship PRs — all from your terminal. The catch? Up to $200 per month, opaque rate limits that reset every five hours, and a pricing model so confusing that developers have written full analyses just to understand what they’re actually getting.

Enter Goose, an open-source AI coding agent built by Block (formerly Square). It does nearly everything Claude Code does — writes code, debugs, orchestrates multi-file workflows, integrates with external APIs — but it runs entirely on your local machine. No subscription. No cloud dependency. No rate limits. Your code never leaves your hardware.

Goose isn’t a weekend hack. It has 26,000+ GitHub stars, 362 contributors, and 102 releases. The entire 209GB model streams from SSD through a custom Metal compute pipeline. No Python. No frameworks. Pure C and hand-tuned Metal shaders. The secret? Only 4 of 512 experts activate per token, so only ~6.75MB needs to load at a time. The OS page cache handles caching naturally — hitting a 71% hit rate without any custom cache layer.

This isn’t a toy. The 4-bit configuration produces “excellent” quality output with full tool calling support. You can ask it complex questions and get production-grade responses on consumer hardware.

And If You Need Cloud, It Just Got Cheaper

If local inference isn’t your thing, the cloud itself is being disrupted. Railway just raised a $100M Series B to challenge AWS, offering deployments in under one second at 87% lower costs than traditional cloud providers. One customer reported their infrastructure bill dropping from $15,000/month to $1,000. Another runs their entire customer-facing system on Railway for $444 per month.

Railway charges by the second for actual compute usage — no paying for idle VMs that sit at 10% utilization, which is still the standard cloud pricing model. A CTO who previously needed six full-time engineers just to manage AWS now has six engineers total, all focused on product.
